AUTOMOTIVE DISC BRAKES SYSTEM

AUTOMOTIVE DISC BRAKES SYSTEM
first disc brake used in BRM type 15s
In 1890s England began this automotive disc brake sytem technology. In now a days all types of automobile manufactures are using a disc braking system for efficient braking they puts ABS, EBD etc.. technology to their models. Mostly EBD can seen from 4-wheel categories. In bikes has traction controller type etc. we will discuss the ABS, EBD system in the next session. Now we discuss about Disc Brakes. first used in racing motors so you can realize that how much efficient is that in 1890s.
Now also comparing to drum brakes. Drum brakes Used in duty trucks/heavy trucks. Drum brakes can provide more braking force than an equal diameter disk brake, last longer, Increase friction contact area than disc, cheaper than disc. so thats why heavy motors using drum such brakes.
Are disc brakes worth it? yes, disc brakes generate far more braking power than standard rim brakes. only apply less pressure on the brake levers, the main advantage is heat dissipation is good in disc because mostly all parts are exposed in the atmosphere. offer greater stopping power,  Also now technologies are updating day by day disc brakes practically possible to upgrade. Eg ABS type technology using in drum brake practically is not possible.
  • Materiel used
Mainly composed of cast iron in some cases be made of the composite such as reinforced carbon-carbon or ceramic matrix composites which has more frictions.
AUTOMOTIVE DISC BRAKES SYSTEM

  • Design
The part which is exposed is disc (brake disc) and the upper portion is a caliper. which is to be mounted on stationary part. And the disc is placed to the wheel. Disc will rotatory part and caliper will be stationary part. Bleeder screw is used to temporary opening in an otherwise closed hydraulic system, which facilitates the removal of air or another substance from the system by way of pressure and density differences. Piston will undergo reciprocating motion while the brake is applying brake fluid flows from the master cylinder and then it apply a pressure into the piston. Brake pad is the brake shoe which consist of friction plates. And it is attached to the piston.
  • Working
Which is a simple process. when the pressure is applied to pedal or lever. The fluid will flows from the cylinder to the caliper through the pipe. After it acts a pressure to the piston because fluid is in-compressible. As a result brake pad is fitted with the piston. Brake caliper in turn will squeeze the brake pads against the disc. brake will applies. This process will performs in seconds.

animation of disc brake

The material component for brake disc is quite expensive that is why it is offered by manufacturers as an optional feature rather than a standard one.
